In Phantom City, Moruti the Wandering AI demonstrates her powers by changing the area’s appearance. She explains she can control all aspects of The World… and that the Fountain of Illusion drying up (episode 1) and the difficult monsters were her doing. She can even teleport people to her as Shugo discovers when he attempts to Data Drain and Komiyama appears in her arms.
Now that Phantom City has been dropped from CC Corporation’s control, Reki and Kamui can do little but watch the events unfold. Moruti has all the power, and she’s programmed the NPCs of the twon to attack Shugo’s party. He wants to Data Drain her, but Sanjuro warns she is their only connection to Rena.
Back in Reki’s office, Kamui reports on the latest findings about the hacker kids. Apparently, they had an interest in death. Reki turns his back, and Kamui stabs hi with her spear. His character turns grey and disappears…
Moruti wants to understand the true meaning of death, so she used the hacker kids to create true death in The World. She demonstrates by PKing an NPC.
Reki logs back into the game and teleports back to his office to continue his discussion with Kamui. He teleports a frozen monster into the room and explains when a player is killed by this monster, a special gate opens and they are transferred to a special area within the server. The player is then caught in an illusion which makes them believe they really are dead. It seems the kids created this program to understand perfect death.
Back in Phantom City, Balmung and Sanjuro try to explain that perfect death has no place in The World. They realize Aura must have sensed something wasn’t right and reactivated Kite and Black Rose’s characters to fight against the anomaly. Shugo’s bracelet must hold the key to defeating these new villains.
In Reki’s office, Kamui explains Shugo initially was the hacker kids’ target, but recently, they’ve gone after Rena. If Shugo had gotten caught in the death illusion and something went wrong, he could have used the bracelet to escape. Without a bracelet, Rena could not.
Shugo and party figure out Moruti’s ultimate goal – to eliminate Aura, the one being that can exist in the world anywhere, which inversely means she doesn’t exist anywhere. Most likely, Rena will be bait to catch Aura. Inside the cave illusion, a large monster swallows Rena and teleports to Moruti.
At the office, Kamui and Reki create a highly contagious virus that will corrupt game data and delete any backups from CC Corporation’s backup servers. Once the virus is complete, they will insert it into Rena.
Moruti is one step ahead and begins her World of Death scheme by injecting Rena and players who know Rena’s member address (including Aura) with a virus to delete their characters. Immediately, everyone’s hit points start dropping and no one can log out. Aura appears and uses her powers to fight the virus while Balmung serves as party healer and everyone else attacks.
With the virus unleashed, Reki and Kamui take action to stop its transmission. If they fail, Aura will no longer exist – and they will probably fall unconscious or die in the real world. With grave consequences at stake, Kamui teleports to Phantom City to fight to the end with the one she loves… Balmung.
In Phantom City, the virus destroys the party’s weapons and soon they are fighting barehanded. Aura cautions Shuga not to Data Drain or it may harm Rena and she may not be able to suppress the virus. Kamui advises the party to use items against Moruti, while Shugo takes a hit and is tossed into the city ruins. In the distance, he spots a silhouette hiding amongst the buildings.
