Lucy runs out of the house, pushing Mayu down, before demanding to know if Nana came for a rematch. Inside, Kohta cuts himself while making dinner. Yuka leaves the room for a moment and notices that Nyu's room is empty. Where'd she go now?
Outside, Mayu runs up to Nyu and hugs her so she can't hurt Nana. She tells Lucy that she can stop if she wants to. Lucy walks to Nana and flashes back to chibi Kohta telling her to stop.
The act of kindness does the trick and soon, Lucy's back to Nyu and Nana's welcome for dinner. Not having eaten in a long time, Nana devours everything in sight. Mayu then asks Kohta if Nana can spend the night. When Kohta asks if she's homeless, she admits there aren't many places that people with horns can go. He agrees to let her stay, but the conversation quickly turns back to their previous argument. She doesn't want to stay with people who think she's a bad person. He counters - why'd she attack Nyu? She replies that she had a reason. Just as she's about to spill it, Nyu hands her a bowl of rice. The tension in the room breaks and everyone laughs when they realize Nyu remembered that Nana gets mad when she's hungry. Nana melts and apologizes for attacking her.
At the research facility, Kurama reflects on his own past. Back in college, he and Kakuzawa Jr were good enough friends that Kakuzawa Jr got him a job at his father's research lab where they were working on the beginnings of a new human race.
Flashback to Lucy's childhood. Police storm a dark building searching for the killer. There, they see a small girl crying. They quickly try to comfort her but she attacks them with her special hands (vectors).
Fast forward a few years - Kakuzawa Jr explains that four years ago, in Kanagawa Prefecture, several girls were born with a rare disease that caused them to grow horns. The men observe a firing squad shooting at a girl chained to a wall. They fire at 270 joules - which appears to be the threshold where her vectors can no longer stop the bullets. Kurama watches the girl's expression as she cries out for help. Please stop trying to hurt her.
Kurama asks why all the cases appeared at the same place at the same time. Kakuzawa Jr explains that these species aren't human. They're diclonious - humanoids with special hands (vectors) that appear around the age of 3. When that happens, they begin their killing spree, often slaughtering their own parents without hesitation.
Fast forward a few years. Kurama is now actively on the project and facing the growing problem that the rate of diclonious births has been increasing. The facility doesn't have the capabilities to house them all, so they must kill the infants they find. One day, diclonious #3 escapes from her cell during mealtime. She systematically kills all guards until she reaches Kurama's office. There, she thanks him with her gun pointed to his face. That brief moment saves his life as a guard is able to get a fatal shot in, killing her before Kurama is shot.
Fast forward a few months - Kurama is now the sole executioner of any infants born as diclonious. They label it 'sudden infant death syndrome.' At one point, Kurama must bear the burden of killing his colleague's infant. But soon, the tables turn as his own wife gives birth to a baby diclonious. All the conversations he's had with new parents over the years flood back as his wife protects their diclonious daughter with her life.
That night, Kurama stands over his infant daughter in the nursery, when his wife, still bleeding excessively, rushes in and begs him not to kill the only daughter they can ever have. She collapses and falls dead before him, with her dying wish to save the baby. The last stance works and Kurama vows that he will protect their daughter.
Research soon reveals that contact with vectors is what has been spreading the virus. Kurama receives a promotion while Kakuzawa Jr heads off on his own to focus on the virus. Kurama's new task is to find the queen responsible for the first infection.
Now, Kurama looks at Nana's picture. Can she escape Kakuzawa Sr now that he knows she's still alive?
The next day, Nana happily accepts Kohta's invitation to stay at the house while Kakuzawa Sr sends #35, the only confirmed 3rd generation diclonious, after Nana and Lucy. Not only is she more powerful than Lucy, but she has 26 visible vectors.
