Isobe and Shirakawa stand outside the cell holding diclonius #35. She's the most powerful of their current specimens and has full range of her vectors, which extend up to 11 meters. If she gets loose, it will be impossible to restrain her.
As they talk, resident researcher Saitoh walks up to them and joins the discussion. She explains that though #35 has been isolated in that chamber since birth, she believes #35 will listen to her. She's been the only human contact #35 has had - and #35 even calls her mom. Though the diclonius may be deadly, Saitoh doesn't think she'll do anything to jeopardize their mother/daughter bond.
Isobe and Shirakawa then discuss Plan B - if #35 doesn't respond to Saitoh, they can use force to control her. When #35 was born, they implanted a bomb into her body. This was both a backup measure to destroy #35 in case she lost control as well as a way for Chief Kakuzawa to control Director Kurama - since #35 is Kurama's own daughter.
Saitoh calls out to #35 - Mariko - come out. The diclonius staggers out of her isolation cell. Her head is wrapped in bandages and she's naked except for a long tube attached to her stomach. As she tries to walk towards Saitoh, she falls to the ground. Worried, Saitoh runs to her and takes Mariko in her arms.
Mariko looks up and asks if Saitoh is her mother. Yes, Saitoh replies. Angrily, Mariko replies that she's not and before anyone realizes what's happened, she violently attacks Saitoh, knocking her backwards against the researchers' station glass.
Once Isobe and Shirakawa realize what's happening, they give the orders to detonate the bomb. Mariko continues her rampage, heading straight towards Shirakawa. Shirakawa freezes like a deer caught in headlights, but just as Mariko is about to attack, Saitoh presses a button to blow off her arm. Mariko falls to the ground, unable to extend her vectors while in pain. Shirakawa hovers over her with a warning - if she doesn't listen, there will be more pain.
Back at Kohta's house, Nana and Mayu eat ice cream while Nyu dissembles a clock. Kohta soon pulls Nana aside and he and Yuka ask her about her relationship with Nyu. Though she refuses to answer, Kohta invites her to stay as long as she pitches in and does her share of the house chores. Happily, she breaks into tears and sobs that she was so scared to be on her own.
Yuka then asks Maya to teach Nana how to do chores. First up - a bath! Nana reveals that this is the first time she's ever immersed herself in hot water - previously, whenever she was dirty, her captors sprayed her down with a hose. Nana then confides that she hopes Lucy never stops being Nyu so she doesn't have to hurt her.
Back at the lab, Shirakawa informs Isobe that she is now in charge of the project since Kurama is nowhere to be found.
Arakawa receives a call asking her to dig up research on a student. She complains that she's been so busy recently that she hasn't even had time to shower in days. Meanwhile, Kurama meets Bando on the beach and plans a deal - he'll repair Bando's mechanical arm if Bando will kill a diclonius for him.
Once Nana has had her bath, Kohta asks Nana to do what she can with chores. Happily, she agrees and then asks Kohta about his little sister, Kanae. He tells her that Kanae passed away, but right before she did, he said some mean things to her that he's always regretted. Now he won't have the chance to apologize. Nyu overhears and rushes over to Kohta. She asks him not to cry and bursts into tears when she sees a flashback of chibi Kohta covered in blood. She grabs a pair of scissors and runs out of the room.
Worried, the other residents quickly scout the house looking for Nyu. Kohta finds her outside - she's cut off her hair. She rushes to him, telling him that she's not Nyu. She's Kanae and she forgives him. That she's sorry. Nana watches, amazed that Nyu would do such a nice thing
