Mariko giggles as she tortures Nana and obviously enjoys causing great pain in others. Slowly, Nana tries to reattach her limbs, but can't find her leg before Mariko picks her high above the street and drops her again. While Nana lies bleeding, Shirakawa observes that Mariko sees this all as a game - like tearing wings off an insect.
Kohta sees Nana being tortured and takes her bloody body into his arms. Nana asks why he came back for her, then pushes him aside and begs Mariko not to hurt him. She then turns to Kohta and begs him to leave less he be killed.
Intrigued that a diclonius has made friends with a human, Shirakawa tells her armed guards to cease fire while she talks with Kohta. Isobe refuses her request and orders Mariko to kill Nana now. Jealously, Mariko resumes her torturous activities, declaring that it wasn't fair that Nana had friends. She won't allow it. As she moves closer to Nana, Nana extends her vectors and pushes herself over the bridge and into the water below, narrowly escaping another round of violence.
With Nana out of the picture, Nyu runs over to Kohta. Worried, Shirakawa grabs him and warns that Lucy will kill him. She then orders Mariko to kill Lucy. Mariko tells her she can't - that girl isn't Lucy. Suddenly, Mariko realizes she can't use her vectors. Now helpless, she breaks into tears.
Kohta grabs Nyu's hand and they make a run for it, but Isobe and his guardsmen have them surrounded.
Back at the Kaede House, Yuka tries to make sense of Kohta's actions. Why is he so willing to help others? Mayu explains that Kohta isn't able to turn his back on others. He feels that it's his responsibility to help if he can. Yuka's certain his behavior must have something to do with Kanae's death. Mayu continues - this is the only place she's ever called home. She thinks it's nice to have parents. When Yuka looks startled, Mayu explains that Kohta plays the father figure and Yuka the mother.
With Kohta in danger, Nyu transforms into Lucy and goes into attack mode. Quickly, she rips Shirakawa apart and then takes on the gunmen while Kohta spirals into a panic.
As the events unfold around him, Kohta's childhood memories return to him. He remembers playing games with Yuka at the carnival and losing sight of Kanae. Dad runs up to them, worried. It seems a bomb exploded down the street. Kanae emerges from an alleyway covered in blood and explains that she saw lots of people get killed. When the family drops Yuka off safely at home, Kohta promises Yuka that he'll return next year and that he won't forget her. Jealous, Kanae hugs Kohta tightly and sticks her tongue out at Yuka.
As Kohta and his family get on the train, he looks for Lucy. He's disappointed that she didn't come to see him off like she promised. Kanae is still jealous that her big brother likes Yuka. She calls him a dummy and tells him that he should be killed by the girl with the horns. Surprised, Kohta asks her to repeat what she said. She retorts that the girl with horns killed everyone. Kohta calls her a liar and demands that she tell the truth. He doesn't like brats that lie. Frustrated and hurt, Kanae runs into the next train car where Lucy happens to be sitting.
When Kanae sees Lucy, she panics and backs away. Kohta walks up behind her and sees Lucy. He tries to make conversation, but Lucy's too mad to listen to him. They flash back to their time together - and the time on the train when Lucy asks Kohta to kill her if she can't stop killing.
As Kanae tries to protect her brother from Lucy, Kohta doesn't yet sense the danger they are in and slaps her. He demands Kanae apologize to his friend or he'll hate her forever. Horrified, Kanae backs away and in that moment, Lucy snaps Kanae's body in two.
When Kohta starts flipping out, his dad walks over to them. Lucy rips off his head. Kohta turns to Lucy and asks why she did this - weren't they friends
