While Shirakawa reports that Number 7 has been disposed of, Yuka finds a goodbye letter from Mayu. Kohta and Yuka discuss letting Mayu stay with them but that might lead to tough times. They then head out in search of her.
As Kohta and Yuka search the market for Mayu, we see a flashback of Mayu's horrible home life. When her mother remarried, her stepfather repeatedly molested her. When she told her mother about the abuse, her mother slapped her and told her she wasn't wanted in the household. One day, Mayu couldn't take it anymore and ran away.
Now Mayu and Wanta stand by the ocean until a woman calls out for her puppy, James. Wanta sadly trots off with his previous owner, who refuses to let Mayu visit. Sad, she curls up in a corner under the docks and cries until two police officers find her. Luckily, at that moment, Kohta and Yuka show up and explain that she's family. They had a fight earlier but are happy to finally have found her.
Later, Kohta tells Mayu that she can stay there. To celebrate, they give her a birthday cake from the baker. Nyu even offers her a bowl of rice since she looked so happy yesterday when she ate it. Both joy at the kind gesture and sadness at being such a bother overwhelm her and Mayu breaks into tears.
A few days later, Kohta and Yuka have successfully completed the official paperwork so that Mayu can stay there and attend school. They marvel at how easily Mayu's mother approved of it. He thought she'd put up more of a fight but it didn't even seem as if she filed a missing persons report with the police.
Yuka, Kohta, and Nyu head to their first day of class gossiping about their new professor, who is supposed to call on students randomly. Yuka hopes he doesn't call on Nyu, but Kohta reminds her that this school is for dummies and doesn't require any entrance exams except for a physical. Sure enough, the professor walks in and first calls on Kohta. When he doesn't know the answer, Nyu raises her hand aggressively. Prof Kakuzawa immediately recognizes Lucy and backs away. Why is she here? Yuka and Kohta quickly try to sneak her out of the class, but the professor cancels class and asks the three come with him to his office. There, he informs them that Lucy is his younger brother's child and demands to know what's going on.
When Kohta and Yuka explain they found Nyu on the beach, he accuses them of kidnapping her. Her family is very worried. She lost her memory and has language difficulties. With little choice, Kohta must leave Nyu in Prof Kakuzawa's care and walks out. Horrified, Nyu watches him go and for the first time, cries out his name 'Kohta! Kohta!' Kohta keeps walking until Yuka finally catches up with him. Together, they try to come to terms with giving up Nyu but find themselves in tears.
Meanwhile, Prof Kakuzawa is delighted to find out about Lucy's split personality. He has big plans for her. Scared, all Nyu can do is cry while the professor puts her to sleep and talks of how when she awakens, they'll be the Adam and Eve of the new mankind. She'll bear his children.
When Kohta and Yuka return without Nyu, Mayu asks what's up. When they explain, Mayu has doubts that Prof Kakuzawa's story was true - but then she doesn't believe much in family. Yuka decides they should pay Prof Kakuzawa a visit one more time.
After Mayu heads off to bed, Yuka asks Kohta if he'd cry like that if she was gone. He defensively tells her he doesn't know. It was an impulse reaction. She breaks into tears as he leaves the room - and to himself, whispers that she shouldn't ask him such a thing.
As Prof Kakuzawa is ready to have his way with Nyu, Lucy awakens. He explains that his father wants to restrain her, but he doesn't. He wants her to be faithful to her DNA - to destroy mankind and create a new world populated with Diclonius. Whipping off his wig, he reveals that like her, he has horns. Lucy remains unimpressed and explodes his head. She doesn't need someone like him.
