Nana watches, surprised, as Nyu falls backwards from the impact of her blow. Why didn't Nyu react like last time? She doesn't have much time to analyze the situation before the rest of the household demands to know why she just attacked Nyu. Mayu is embarrassed that her new friend would act so inappropriately while Kohta gets in her face. After a brief exchange where Nana tries to explain that Lucy is bad and she is good, Kohta slaps her face. Shocked, she turns and runs away.
Mayu follows Nana and the two have a heart to heart about why Nana called Nyu 'Lucy.' She's certain that Nana has the wrong girl.
Meanwhile Kakuzawa Jr.'s assistant delivers a package to Kakuzawa Sr. - his son's horned head. When the assistant turns to exit, Kakuzawa pulls a gun and wounds her, claiming she knows too much.
Nana continues her explanation about Lucy's true nature - that she's a cold blooded killer. She and Lucy, the horned ones, aren't human. They were born with an extra set of special hands. To demonstrate, she explains that Lucy ripped off her arms and legs, but she is able to control her new limbs with her other set of hands.
Kakuzawa gives the assistant, who's now bleeding profusely from her shoulder wound, a choice. If she'll answer his questions truthfully, he'll let her live. Who was the other witness who saw his son's body? Weakly, she replies that a student came to see the professor about a girl. When Kakuzawa is convinced he has the truth, he tells Shirakawa to call a medical team.
Nana explains that while Lucy has killed many people with her hands, Nana has never done anything bad. Mayu replies that Nyu has never used the hands. She's always been happy and innocent. This surprises Nana, who can't figure out why she can't sense Lucy's presence in Nyu. Still, Nana has a dilemma - if she attacks Lucy now, she'll definitely win. But she can't fight someone who's defenseless.
Back home, Kohta and Yuka tend to Nyu, who is weak with fever. She wants to take Nyu to the hospital, but Kohta remembers what the assistant said - that people with horns are isolated. Suddenly, Nana senses Lucy awakens and Nyu whispers 'Kohta'.
In the research facility, Kurama is briefed on the situation involving Kakuzawa's assistant. He wonders why they've brought in an outsider when they could develop a vaccination without her. Kakuzawa Sr. explains that his goal isn't merely to create a vaccine. It's to reinvent humanity. Lucy's birth is proof that mankind is on a path to extinction. Now, it's up to him to see that through. Kurama is shocked at the revelation but Kakuzawa Sr. quickly changes the subject to disloyalty. He knows that Kurama let #7 escape. Now, he's decided to send #35 to kill Nana and capture Lucy.
Lucy awakens, rolls back her covers and stumbles out of her bedroom in a daze. Kohta and Yuka rush over to her and ask where she's going in her condition. She mumbles something about teaching that stupid girl a lesson but collapses with weakness. Kohta coaxes her back into bed while Yuka goes out for medicine.
The next sequence of events is a flashback to Lucy's childhood where we learn she was not always an emotionless killing machine. A chain of events triggered her...
Chibi Lucy awakens in her orphanage and wanders out of her room. There, she overhears her caretakers talking about her weird horns and that she's an outcast in school. Not wanting to hear any more, she walks outside where finds comfort in the companionship of a stray dog she's recently been feeding. The dog's her only real friend.
The next day at school, a group of boys led by school bully, Tomoo, continue to pick on chibi Lucy, the only kid in the class to have horns. They pour milk in her bag and taunt her about being an outcast until a girl walks in and defends her. She then takes Lucy into the bathroom and washes out her bag.
Later, Lucy takes the dog some leftover food from her lunch and confesses that she doesn't know how long she can stand being in this place. She fears that if the boys learn about her pet, they'll do something to harm him and she's not strong enough to protect it. When she dreams, it's of hands pushing upwards and it feels like something is changing inside of her. When she wakes, there are handprints all over her room.
The next day, Lucy confides to her new friend about her dog. The girl promises not to tell anyone and agrees to give up part of her lunch too.
Of course, Tomoo finds out about the dog and while the other boys hold Lucy back, Tomoo beats and kicks the dog until it dies. Lucy's friend walks in and confesses she told - but she didn't know the boys would kill it. As blood seeps everywhere, Lucy flips out - her first violent killing.
Lucy after burying the dog's remains, Lucy sits over the grave wondering why she's different. Her beloved music box plays in memory of her only friend.
