D N Angel is the story of Daisuke, a clumsy, short fourteen year old whose life is about to change, and not for the reasons he hopes. You see, Daisuke is in love, and today, on his fourteenth birthday, he is about to deliver a love letter to the girl of his dreams. He has carefully prepared the setting, the conversation, and the delivery - and now, he's even mustered up the courage to fulfill his dreams.
Sadly, things don't go quite so smoothly, and Daisuke hears those horrible words - that his love only thinks of him as a good friend. Luckily, Mom and Grandpa have their own plans for Daisuke's fate. It seems that there's a bizarre gene that runs in the Niwa family. Once a boy turns fourteen and falls in love - the very sight of his love (in person, a painting, a photograph, etc) causes him to transform into the thief Dark, a beautiful bishonen about a foot taller than Daisuke with purple hair and black wings.
Daisuke soon becomes jealous of his alter ego, who isn't all that nice and has won the heart of his love. And to make matters worse, Daisuke can't turn off the Dark gene until his true love falls in love with him.
So far, D N Angel is a nice mix of romance/unrequited love and this overarching conflict between Dark and his arch-nemesis, Krad (the name makes me cringe whenever I hear of it). Right now, it doesn't exactly seem like the fate of the world is lying in Daisuke/ Dark's hands, but maybe all these stolen art pieces will play a grander role in the upcoming episodes. Looks like a great series thus far!

The colors are vibrant, with beautifully painted scenery, town scenes that have digital effects to give them depth, and in general, very sharp character designs with very few aliasing problems.

Great opening and closing themes - the first DVD even includes a mini documentary on how Shunichi Miyamoto recorded the opener - White Night ~True Light~

The characters seem interesting so far. It's always great to start off with characters with alter egos and have them in love with the same girl and battling for control.
