Creating Your Own Anime Website

I am going to be starting my own web site and online store devoted to anime. Since you also had a humble beginning, I was looking to see if you could shed light on how you did it. Did you make your own web page or did you pay to have it professionally done? I would like to know everything. Thank you for your time.

I receive a number of questions like these, so I thought I'd offer some advice about creating your own website. First and foremost, your website should be something you enjoy. While you can make a few bucks on the side, chances are, the cash is not going to come pouring in. In other words, don't think of quitting your day job. You're not going to get rich quick (or probably even very slowly), so if making some money on the side is your primary goal, you're going to find your website very quickly becomes a lot of work.

Planning Your Website
That said, the first step to creating a website is to plan. What kind of website do you want? A blog? A forum? A database of reviews? A collection of anime links? Think it through - how much time are you willing to devote to this? A little planning now will go a long way - believe me!

Developing Your Website
Unless you are a professional web designer (or know one who might do it for very little money), I'd suggest you build it yourself. My site is actually homegrown, but then I've been designing websites since 1996 - both personally and professionally - so I have a decent amount of experience with the web.

If you aren't looking to design your site from scratch, there are a number of template anime websites already out there for you to pick from - try looking at Magitek Designs or Magic Designs or Daydream Graphics to start. If you decide a blog is the way to go, Blogger.com is free and provides free hosting.

Look for templates that not only look nice, but load quickly in your web browser and are easy to navigate. Remember, people will come to your site looking for content. If they can't find what they're looking for, or if your font's too difficult to read, or if they can't get passed your annoying splash screen that takes forever to load, odds are, they'll leave.

Web Hosting
If you're looking for free web hosting, check out AnimeWebHost.com or Anipike's directory of listings. I use a paid hosting provider called CrystalTech.com.

Anime Content
Having great anime content that's updated frequently is a must if you want people to visit often. Think about what types of info you want to include. If you're just starting out, you might want to focus on one particular anime and expand. Or, perhaps you want to create an anime blog and offer a play by play of the highlights for each episode you watch. There are other sites that review dvds or anime series. Other sites provide downloads and multimedia. Still others are primarily community based and allow readers to contribute content or post in a forum.

FYI - multimedia websites are heavily bandwidth intensive. Check with your web host to see how much bandwidth transfer you're allowed and if you can share media files under their terms and conditions. Also remember that if you're looking to share anime, make sure you abide by your country's copyright laws or you can find yourself in legal trouble.

Affiliate Programs
There are a number of affiliate programs out there if you want to sell products through your website, such as Amazon.com Associates, Animenation, Viz, ADV, or RightStuf. Most offer somewhere between 5-10% commission on all sales.

Keep in mind, however, that only a small portion of those that click through will actually buy. Of all your visitors, maybe only 3-5% will click on a product ad such as a dvd or manga. Of those, an even smaller number will buy.

My own conversion rates seem to be somewhere between 1-2% - meaning for everyone that clicks on an Amazon.com link, only 1-2% will actually buy a product. Lots of people are just window shopping. Others are under 18 and may not have a credit card. Still, others might be doing research and then purchase offline.

In terms of real numbers, say I have 2000 visitors on any given day. If I expect 5% to click on any of my ads, that's 100 people. And of those 100 people, I expect 1-2% to buy something, that's only a sale or two per day. If your average DVD is $20 and you get 5% commission, you're making a buck or two per day. So, as I mentioned in the beginning, if you're going into this expecting to make lots of money, you'll probably be disappointed.

Promoting Your Website
Finally, once you have your website up and running, make sure to promote it. Submit it to search engines and anime directories, ask people to exchange banners or affiliate with you, and include it in your email sig file or forum profile. i get all of this...but HOW do I actually MAKE a website about Inuyasha and add quizes, votes, comments, fan-made stories and a about the characters column? I need all of that on my Inuyasha website that I'm TRYING to make! How do I do all that?

Jessica - if you want quizzes, polls, comments, etc, the easiest thing would be to set up a Wordpress blog.

AnimeBlogger.net offers free web hosting but you can also get cheap hosting through BlueHost or Anhosting. Both have 1 click Wordpress installation.

Once you have Wordpress installed, you can customize it with different themes and plugins (for the polls/quizzes/comment features). Search the web on this - there are no shortage of sites that teach you how to install and customize Wordpress.

While I agree that anyone going into any business for the sole purpose of making money are gonna be disappointed, you need to make sure that people know that there are anime sites out there that do pretty well in the affiliate department.

The sites that do succeed are run by people that are serious about their work, and over time rose up to become one of the big boys (and girls) that have thousands of visitors a day coming to their site.

Problem is, many anime site creators don't work on their sites on a daily basis, and even if they do, they abandon it 6 months later, you just can't do that. The successful bloggers stick it out for years, cause anime is what they love. See, it all pans out over time.
